4/18 - Travelogue - Russia: Old and New with Barbara and Grant Winther
Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the modern world has gradually infiltrated Russia, the greatest influence occurring during the past ten years. Most changes have come to people who live in cities and towns: the growth of a market economy, the influence of the West in music, art, food and fashion, the emergence of a middle class and the freedom to exchange ideas. However, old ways still exist, mainly in the countryside where people’s lives remain untouched by the changes or they prefer to ignore them.
"Russian Gothic" - Visiting Vera and Yuri in the Countryside (by Grant Winther)
Most significant for foreign visitors has been the opening up of such places as the once-forbidden Kremlin in the Red Square of Moscow, the freedom to travel around the country and the growing number of restaurants and hotels.
A mix of the old and the new—our travelogue gives you a glimpse of what Russia is like today.
About our Speakers: Barbara
and Grant Winther have chronicled their travels since 1991 when they were part
of a team that produced the guide Country
Inns and Back Roads. In 2001, shortly
after the publication of They Like Noble Causes, the book Barbara
wrote about how Bainbridge Islanders built their library, the couple began their on-going collaboration of travel articles for
The Library News. Barbara writes the
stories about where they go and what they do; Grant takes the photos to
illustrate them.
Among
Barbara’s publications are plays based on the folklore of various
cultures and fictional
books set in foreign countries.

This is the fifth Winther travelogue sponsored by The Traveler.
